The Fox sci-fi show “The Orville” Season 2 is getting closer to hitting the small screen and even with its second season, this is still a widely misunderstood series. Due to the fact that it was created by the same man behind “Family Guy,” Seth MacFarlane, many expected the show to be a comedy. However, this is actually not the case, with the aim being the opposite; drama.

MacFarlane himself revealed that the intent behind “The Orville” Season 2 was to present interactions in a way that would be considered realistic. The comedy then stems from the fact that the characters of the show are simply acting like how real people would. Neither the script nor the events of the show were created with comedy baked into the routine. At least, this is what he told Us Weekly.

“Any kind of a tonal hybrid is an experiment for television or film, and we were really working hard to find what that balance was during the first season,” the actor/show creator said. “We wanted just to scale it a little bit more in the dramatic direction and make the show not so much a space comedy-drama, but a space drama that shows realistic casual interactions.

“The comedy comes from people behaving like people and not so much from hard jokes. I always firmly believe that, in order to sustain an hour-long show on a weekly basis, the stakes had to be real. The jeopardy had to be real. The drama had to be real. What the characters were going through had to matter.”

“The Orville” Season 2 should provide a clearer look into exactly what this show is all about. Basically, despite the comedic origins of the show’s creator, the program itself is more akin to “Star Trek” than anything else. Its Dec. 30 premiere should help provide context to its nature.
