Sonic Drive-In is famous for its nugget ice, loved for its chewable texture and cooling power. While not listed on the menu, customers can order 10-pound bags of Sonic’s signature ice for just a few dollars by simply asking at the drive-thru.
Sonic Drive-In's Famous Nugget Ice: The Secret Menu Item You Can Take Home
Does ice make the world go round? Perhaps not, but it sends many to one fast food chain when seeking a refreshing way to cool down. Sonic Drive-In, the undisputed winner in fast food ice rankings, is famous for its nugget ice—sometimes called pellet or pebble ice. Loved for its ability to keep drinks cold and satisfyingly chewable long after they are gone, Sonic's Ice has garnered a devoted following. Even actor Matthew McConaughey counts himself a fan, revealing to Texas Monthly that he spent years searching for an ice maker capable of replicating Sonic's frozen treat.
McConaughey eventually found his solution in the Manitowoc QF-400, though it’s not a practical or affordable option for most people to install a commercial ice machine in their homes. However, Sonic makes it easy for nugget ice enthusiasts to bring the experience home by offering bags of its beloved ice for sale.
Weighing 10 pounds and typically priced around $3.00 (though prices vary by location), Sonic's nugget ice is available for customers to take home, even if it's not listed on the menu. As TikTok user @wtfinrecipe discovered, simply asking for a bag of ice at the drive-thru or drive-up stall will prompt the restaurant to fulfill the request.
Keep Sonic's Nugget Ice Perfect: Tips to Prevent It from Melting into a Solid Block
Despite its popularity, nugget ice has one drawback—it melts faster than traditional ice cubes. Reddit user u/madeupname-_- pointed out that transporting a 10-pound bag of Sonic ice home can be tricky. "If it melts even a little [bit] on the way home and freezes again, it basically turns into a solid block of ice," they explained.
One solution to this problem is gently dropping the bag on the ground to break the ice. However, TikTok user @theballardbunch found a more effective method to prevent the ice from solidifying in the first place. In a video shared in November 2023, they recommended draining the bag of any melted water before placing it in the freezer. By cutting a small hole in the bottom corner to release the water and then freezing the bag for 15 minutes, the ice can be broken up by gently hitting the bag on a hard surface. Repeating this process ensures that the ice retains its beloved nugget form, making it ready to enjoy without turning into a solid block.
For Sonic fans, these tips can keep their favorite nugget ice in its perfect state, extending the enjoyment of their frozen treat well beyond the drive-thru.
