“The Walking Dead” Season 9 will have a new star headlining the post-apocalyptic drama as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are set to exit the show in the next installment. As such, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is likely going to lead the crew moving forward.
However, Reedus said that the showrunners didn’t tell him his character is going to replace Rick. The 49-year-old actor even said that Rick has always and will always be the quarterback of the group, even after he exits in “The Walking Dead” Season 9, Comic Book reported.
Following this statement, it’s unclear who will take the place of Rick as the leader of the group; which has grown from a small crew of misfits into a community rife with inside conflict. Rick has always been the key factor in keeping everyone in line as characters look up to him because of his calm demeanor and fierce loyalty to those he wants to protect. But that integral part is now gone as “The Walking Dead” Season 9 will see Rick’s exit from the show after years of leading the faction.
The trailer for the next installment of the post-apocalyptic drama already showed a sneak peek at fights breaking out in the community. And since Rick and Maggie will be out of the picture, it will be up to Daryl to keep everyone pacified. Indeed, the sneak peek shows Daryl beating someone up, perhaps trying to put some lesson into the offender’s head.
But fans know all too well what will happen when a situation is diffused using violence instead of words. People hold grudges and most of the time this is the seed that will eventually create a rift between leaders and subordinates. “The Walking Dead” Season 9 is certainly going to explore this theme regarding how best to control a community that is thriving amidst a world where the dead walk among the living.
The arc of Negan showed fascism will only get a group so far before things spiral out of control. With the exit of Rick Grimes, will the showrunners have Daryl and the other veterans adopt the same policy that the Saviors employed? Fans will have to find out when “The Walking Dead” Season 9 debuts on Oct. 7.
