Fans have known for some months now that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) will be leaving in “The Walking Dead” season 9. But before he leaves, Scott Gimple teased fans that there will be a significant development in Rick and Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) relationship.
The exact episode in which Rick will be last seen is still unknown. However, it now appears that it is slated late enough in “The Walking Dead” season 9 for the writers to establish a “deeper” relationship between Rick and Michonne.
AMC’s chief content officer for all “Walking Dead” franchises, Gimple, told TVLine about the "Richonne" teasers for “The Walking Dead” season 9. “[Their connection] is deeper now. They went through a remarkably intense thing together. She was there for him in so many different ways, and the things she ultimately led him to do were so important,” Gimple explained.
Rick and Michonne are in one of the few romantic relationships that have managed to remain intact up to “The Walking Dead” season 9. However, Gimple also recognized that they are evidently not seen in a lot of intense and passionate moments together while fighting for their lives. But that changes especially after the 18-month time jump since the war concluded in season 8.
The creator of the zombie apocalypse world where Rick and Michonne exist added that it will be “remarkable to see” how these characters changed as a couple within the said 18 months. “While they haven’t been a picnic, the war has been over,” Gimple noted hinting that Rick and Michonne have had more lovey-dovey moments coming into the “The Walking Dead” season 9 timeline.
“Rick and Michonne just feel like a very tight couple. It’s something to see. Their scenes together are very special,” Gimple added about “The Walking Dead” season 9.

While it has been confirmed that “The Walking Dead” season 9 is Lincoln’s final stint as Rick, the manner of his departure remains a mystery. It is quite ironic that he is leaving after successfully defeating Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and, in addition to that, Rick’s archnemesis seems to survive the rest of and beyond “The Walking Dead” season 9.
In the end, the new showrunner Angela Kang promised to treat Rick’s exit with respect. “The Walking Dead” season 9 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
