‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 11, titled “The Right Thing to Do,” is set to pick up after Toby’s heart attack. Creator Dan Fogelman promised that his fate will be revealed in the first five minutes of the episode.
The synopsis for “The Right Thing to Do” posted on TV Guide reads, “Kate (Chrissy Metz) struggles to cope during the aftermath of Toby's (Chris Sullivan) heart attack;
William (Ron Cephas Jones) and Jesse (Denis O’Hare) grow closer, forcing Randall (Sterling K. Brown) to become accustomed to their relationship; and Olivia (Janet Montgomery) unexpectedly resurfaces.
In the past, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) seek an affordable home in light of the news they'll be having triplets.”
The incoming episode is set to pick up after the events of the cliffhanger finale, “Last Christmas,” directed by Helen Hunt. Toby managed to surprise Katy by showing up in Randall’s home as the Pearson family gathered for the holidays. He flew from New York to New Jersey to make amends and win Kate back.
The two ended their relationship because of Kate’s desire to focus on her weight. She didn’t think their relationship was supporting her since he wasn’t on a diet.
Toby and Kate eventually got back together but Toby collapsed and was immediately rushed to a hospital to undergo surgery. His fate remains unknown since the show cut to the credits before his heart monitor flat-lined.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Dan Fogelman admitted, “We’re not going to drag out Toby’s fate… You find out if he made it in the first five minutes of the episode.”
Fogelman also teased that the episode will feature Jack and Rebecca’s backstory to when they first learned of Rebecca’s pregnancy. He teased, “We go back to their pre-Big Three period — actually, we start early in the pregnancy... before they even knew they were having triplets.”
‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 11, titled "The Right Thing to Do," is scheduled to air on NBC on January 10, 2017. It will be followed by episode 12, titled "The Big Day," scheduled for January 17.
