Tetris is a game formula that has been around for so long, with entire generations coming and going during that interval. Even today, it remains one of the most important video game formats in existence and a new PSVR title just took it to the next level. Called “The Tetris Effect,” this game was created by the same people behind "Lumines" and "Rez Infinite" and was specifically designed to hook players in and not let them go even after the session is done.
The game is named after a known scientific phenomenon that is also called The Tetris Effect, Ars Technica reports. It’s basically where players of "Tetris" see blocks from the game in real life long after playing it on whatever device they were using.
The study was conducted by Harvard researchers in 2000 and the results were astounding. Not only did some of the participants who played the game see blocks in real life hours after doing so, even those who had brain damage and could no longer form new memories also experienced the same phenomenon.
This is what Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the developer of the upcoming VR game, wanted to replicate in his title. Based on the trailer released, he might have just pulled it off. Not only is the imagery incredibly beautiful and absolutely hypnotic, the orchestral score really pulls the viewer in and might have just been combined to blow all other concerns from their minds until the clip is done.
Of course, anyone who has ever played one of Mizuguchi’s games before won’t be surprised by the theme of the title. It’s meant to be a purely audio-visual experience that is intended to put the focus on the most essential aspects of gaming, shedding any unnecessary baggage in the process. This makes "The Tetris Effect" one of the most highly anticipated and potentially most essential PSVR games ever.
