U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Michael Flynn, his ex-national security adviser, to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point's board of visitors. Flynn, a retired three-star general, was fired after 24 days in the Trump administration for misleading then-Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador. He later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, recanted, and received a presidential pardon.
Flynn, a vocal Trump ally, has promoted baseless conspiracy theories and challenged the legitimacy of the 2020 election. His appointment allows him to weigh in on curriculum, discipline, and policies at the prestigious military institution. The move has drawn criticism, given Flynn’s history of controversial statements and support for anti-democratic narratives.
Trump also named Maureen Bannon, daughter of his former strategist Steve Bannon, to the board. While these roles are largely advisory, they provide a platform for influence at West Point.
Flynn remains a prominent figure in conservative circles, frequently speaking at right-wing events and appearing on political podcasts. The Southern Poverty Law Center has criticized him for spreading conspiracy theories and making inflammatory statements.
Trump’s decision to place Flynn in a position tied to military education is expected to spark debate, particularly as the former general remains a divisive figure in U.S. politics.
