US President Donald Trump canceled his planned visit to Alabama on Saturday to attend a highly anticipated college football game between Georgia and Alabama, citing safety concerns as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast.

Trump announced the decision on Friday, explaining that emergency personnel should prioritize protecting communities and responding to the hurricane rather than managing security arrangements for a presidential visit.

The president had been scheduled to attend Saturday night's matchup in Tuscaloosa between the No. 2-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and No. 6-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The game is among the most anticipated college football contests of the season.

Despite canceling his Alabama appearance, Trump confirmed that he still intends to travel to Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday for a campaign rally supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

In a social media post, Trump emphasized that first responders must remain focused on hurricane preparations and emergency assistance rather than his presence.

He said emergency workers should be helping residents "and in no way be thinking about the safety, or presence, of the President of the United States, ME!"

Trump expressed disappointment about missing the football game but remained hopeful that the matchup would proceed despite the severe weather threat.

"Therefore, I will miss that potentially unbelievable Game, Alabama vs. Georgia but, hopefully, the Game will go on despite the weather!" Trump wrote.

Hurricane Isaias intensified Thursday while moving toward the US Gulf Coast, triggering widespread preparations across vulnerable areas. Authorities ordered mandatory evacuations in parts of Florida, while Alabama officials declared emergencies as forecasters warned of potentially dangerous conditions.

Weather officials cautioned that the powerful storm could produce life-threatening storm surges, tornadoes and significant flooding across affected communities.

Tuscaloosa, where the Alabama-Georgia football game is scheduled, lies within the hurricane's projected path, raising concerns about public safety and possible disruptions to the sporting event.

Trump said he plans to visit both college football teams at a later date, although no specific schedule has been announced.

The cancellation comes as Gulf Coast communities prepare for Hurricane Isaias while political campaigns continue ahead of the closely watched US midterm elections.
