U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are maintaining close communication as trade discussions between the two nations intensify, according to the White House. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday that both leaders continue to engage in regular dialogue, emphasizing Trump’s respect for Modi and the significance of ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi.
“The president and his trade team continue to be in very serious discussions with India,” Leavitt told reporters, underscoring the White House’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
Last week, while visiting South Korea, President Trump expressed his intention to finalize a trade deal with India. His remarks signal a potential thaw in relations that had reached their lowest point in decades following heightened tariff tensions. Earlier this year, the U.S. administration doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50% in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, a move that strained diplomatic and economic relations.
However, recent developments suggest both sides are seeking common ground. India, one of the largest consumers of energy globally, has since reduced its imports of Russian oil following Washington’s sanctions on Moscow’s leading crude exporters, Rosneft and Lukoil. The shift reflects India’s effort to balance its strategic partnerships while mitigating the impact of U.S. sanctions.
Trade experts believe renewed talks could pave the way for a more balanced trade framework, addressing issues such as tariffs, market access, and energy cooperation. Strengthened U.S.-India relations are viewed as essential for regional stability and economic growth, especially amid shifting global trade dynamics.
