President Donald Trump said the United States is making progress toward establishing a US Army base in Poland, a move that could deepen military cooperation between Washington and Warsaw and strengthen NATO’s presence on its eastern flank.
Trump announced the development on Thursday, crediting Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s leadership for advancing discussions over an expanded American military presence in the country.
“If this happens, the location will be announced very soon,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, describing the potential agreement as a historic development for the US-Poland alliance.
Poland has sought a larger allied military presence since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in 2022. Warsaw’s location on NATO’s eastern flank has made US military deployments in Poland an important part of the alliance’s regional security posture.
Polish officials have been pressing Washington to move beyond the largely rotational deployment of American forces and establish a permanent US military presence.
In June, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the US Department of Defense was receptive to Poland’s proposal, although no final decision had been reached at that stage. The discussions came as Washington reviewed the deployment of American troops across Europe.
Kosiniak-Kamysz met US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Brussels in June, when Hegseth announced a Pentagon review of US troop deployments on the continent. Poland has continued lobbying for a long-term American presence as part of its broader effort to strengthen national and regional defenses.
Poland currently hosts thousands of US military personnel, with most deployed on a rotational basis rather than permanently stationed in the country.
Trump’s latest comments indicate that negotiations have advanced, but an agreement and location for the proposed US Army base have not yet been formally announced. If finalized, the arrangement would mark another development in US-Poland defense cooperation and America’s military posture in Eastern Europe.
