President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, has ignited demands from supporters of President-elect Donald Trump to extend similar clemency to those convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot. Hunter Biden’s sweeping pardon, which covers federal gun and tax convictions as well as any potential offenses committed over the past decade, has been met with fierce criticism, particularly from Trump loyalists.
Prominent conservative voices have taken to social media to argue that Biden’s decision underscores a double standard in the justice system. Clay Travis, a conservative commentator, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Trump should pardon every single January 6th defendant on his first day in office. All of them.”
Trump’s Response: “A Miscarriage of Justice”
Trump, who will assume the presidency in January, has consistently expressed support for those involved in the January 6 riot. Responding to Biden’s pardon of Hunter, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”
Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesperson, also condemned the current administration’s Department of Justice, calling it “weaponized” and pledging reforms. “The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,” Cheung said in a statement to Newsweek.
Biden’s Decision Draws Sharp Criticism
Hunter Biden, convicted in June of lying on a federal form during a 2018 gun purchase and failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes, was spared a potential prison sentence by his father’s clemency. The president justified his decision, citing what he described as politically motivated prosecution. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son,” Biden said.
However, this move represents a stark reversal from Biden’s earlier public commitment not to intervene in his son’s legal troubles. Critics argue the decision damages Biden’s legacy, which he has sought to frame as restoring norms and respect for the rule of law after Trump’s first term.
