President Donald Trump plans to host a bipartisan group of U.S. governors at the White House on February 20, according to National Governors Association (NGA) Chairman Kevin Stitt. The annual NGA meeting in Washington traditionally includes a presidential session and formal dinner, bringing together Republican and Democratic governors to discuss national priorities and state-federal cooperation.
Stitt, who also serves as the Republican governor of Oklahoma, said in an email that Trump intended to invite all governors to the breakfast meeting. The clarification followed the cancellation of a previous White House gathering after reports surfaced that some Democratic governors had been excluded. Stitt emphasized that Trump described the event as an official National Governors Association function and expressed his willingness to hear directly from governors across the country.
The NGA meeting is a longstanding tradition where state leaders engage with the president, cabinet secretaries, and senior administration officials. The annual event often focuses on bipartisan policy discussions, federal funding, infrastructure, and economic development.
However, later on Wednesday, Trump stated that two Democratic governors—Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Colorado Governor Jared Polis—would not be invited. In a social media post, Trump criticized Moore’s handling of the rebuilding efforts for Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in 2024 after a cargo ship struck a support pillar. Trump described Moore’s performance as inadequate.
Trump also cited Polis’ refusal to release Tina Peters, a former Colorado county clerk sentenced to nine years in prison for tampering with voting machines following the 2020 presidential election, as justification for excluding him. Trump said he believed the two governors were “not worthy” of attending the White House event.
The White House has not issued further clarification regarding the invitation list.
