Oil prices reversed course and climbed sharply on Tuesday following a CNN report revealing that Iran had begun deploying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global shipping lane responsible for transporting roughly one-fifth of the world's crude oil supply.

According to two individuals with knowledge of U.S. intelligence reporting, Iran placed several dozen mines in the strategic waterway over recent days. Analysts warn the situation could escalate further, as Iran is believed to still possess between 80% and 90% of its small vessels and mine-laying equipment — potentially enabling the deployment of hundreds of additional mines if tensions continue to rise.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which maintains effective control over the strait alongside the country's conventional navy, is equipped with dispersed mine-laying craft, explosive boats, and shore-based missile systems. The IRGC had previously threatened to attack any vessel attempting to pass through, with the waterway described by insiders as a "death valley" due to the extreme risks associated with transit. The strait has been effectively closed since the conflict began.

U.S. officials confirmed that the Navy had not yet escorted any commercial ships through the strait as of Tuesday, though President Donald Trump indicated his administration was actively evaluating options. Trump addressed the crisis directly on Truth Social, demanding that any mines be removed "immediately" and warning of unprecedented military consequences if Iran failed to comply.

In a follow-up post, Trump announced that U.S. forces had destroyed ten inactive mine-laying vessels, adding that further action would follow.

The geopolitical developments rattled financial markets, with major stock indexes declining as crude oil futures moved higher on the news — underscoring how deeply global energy prices remain tied to stability in the Persian Gulf region.
