UK Election: Theresa May loses her Brexit mandate; Nicola Sturgeon loses her independence mandate

As the Election night unfolds, it looks like that Prime Minister Theresa May has lost her Brexit mandate, where she tried to present herself as the most suitable leader to steer the United Kingdom through the difficult negotiations of an exit. Her strong words like ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’ has failed to garner the support she was hoping for. While voting support for her Conservative Party increased by 4.66 percent, the opposition Labour Party saw a surge of more than 10 percent. Her Party has so far suffered a net loss of 10 seats.

Similarly, the election night is turning out to be equally or more disastrous for the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon. Her Party has won 33 seats so far and suffered a net loss of 17 seats compared to the previous election. This can be seen as a clear indication that support for a Scottish independence has faded. Even the former Scottish First Minister who was behind the first Scottish independence referendum has lost his seat.

Latest results:

With 564 seats declared, UK’s Conservative Party is leading with 266 seats. Labour Party has won 234 seats. Scottish National Party has won 33 seats. Democratic Union party has won 10 seats. Liberal Democrats have won 10 seats. Plaid Cymru, which is a social-democratic political party in Wales advocating for Welsh independence from the United Kingdom has won 3 seats, and Sinn Fein has won 7 seats.
