UK retail sales volume soared in June; month-on-month growth reached +1.0% against an anticipated -0.3% drop; year-on-year data showed +4.2% versus the +2.3% prediction. The robust performance came after a respectable +1.2% increase in May and was propelled by a rise in the online share of total sales to 29.4%, its highest level since April 2021. The Office for National Statistics related the unforeseen increase mostly to warmer temperatures driving demand for summer apparel, fans, and air conditioning units as well as heightened food, drink, and electronic purchases related to the soccer World Cup.
Despite constant cost-of-living constraints, digital sales grew 2.8% month-on-month, showing unexpected customer resilience. Still, stores advise that the improvements could be short-lived since underlying mood is still price sensitive once the benefits from sports events and weather pass.
