Republicans have nominated New York business tycoon Donald Trump as their Presidential nominee for this year’s election in the convention that has been tainted by protests against the nominee as well as many absenteeism from prominent republicans. After the news of his nominations broke, Mr. Trump said from New York, “I am so proud to be your nominee for president of the United States………We are going to win the presidency and bring real change and leadership back to Washington. This is going to be a leadership that puts the American people first.” Big applause and cheers erupted on the convention floor as the majority of the New York delegates voted in favor of Mr. Trump and helped him to cross over the 1237 delegates required to ensure his winning.
This officially marked the end of the Republican primaries, where Mr. Trump successfully ousted all of his 16 rivals but his insults and attacks against the candidates as well as the party establishment left the party more divided than ever. Paul Ryan, the Republican speaker of the house endorsed and spoke in support of Mr. Trump but also sent a message to the nominee about the need to end his divisive rhetoric. Mr. Ryan said, “In America, aren’t we all supposed to see beyond class, or ethnicity, or all those other lines drawn to set us apart and lock us in groups?..........Everyone is equal..… Everyone has a place…….no one is written off because there is worth and goodness in every life.”
Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell also endorsed and welcomed Mr. Trump’s nomination saying that he would repeal Obamacare, defund Planned Parenthood, build the Keystone pipeline and nominate a conservative justice to the Supreme Court. He also said, “With Donald Trump in the White House, Senate Republicans will build on the work we’ve done and pass more bills into law than any Senate in years”.
Mr. Trump and the republicans will now turn their full focus in defeating the Democratic nominee, who is most likely to be Hillary Clinton.
