PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is by no means the progenitor when it comes to massive, multiplayer online games built around a third-person shooter setup. However, by elegantly combining all of these aspects and creating a Battle Royale scenario, the game has become a rising star in the industry. Ubisoft has certainly taken note and might incorporate PUBG’s style into one of their downloadable contents.
The idea was brought up by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot himself during one of the company’s regular earnings calls, Gamespot reports. During the meeting, the company boss expressed interest in the mechanics involved in PUBG and said that hinted that they are thinking about releasing a DLC or several DLCs with the same system.
"[Battlegrounds] is doing a fantastic job," Guillemot said. "Rainbow Six continues to grow, and the time spent on the game is increasing, so we didn't see any competition from that game. But we look at what those guys are doing, and it's a type of gameplay that is very interesting and that maybe is something you'll see in some of the DLCs we do on some of our games in the future."
As VG247 notes, applying the PUBG formula as an extra content on games like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon: Wildlands would not actually be out of place. The setting can actually accommodate Hunger Games-like events with the design of the game world being quite suitable for such grand schemes.
On the other hand, Ubisoft could go the other direction and apply a more medieval style to the Battle Royale scenario. After all, For Honor is already employing a PVP matchup. Why couldn’t the developers create a mode where instead of sieges, players can land on a deserted island and have to fight each other with scavenged weapons to the death in order to survive? It’s certainly not too far from the original game mechanics.
