Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Received Very Well, Raving Reviews

When it was announced that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy would be a stand-alone spin-off title of the main game without Nathan Drake as the main character, many were concerned about the end result. Now that the game has come out, reviewers are finally able to give their first impressions. So far, the reactions seem to be largely made up of gushing admiration.

In a Forbes article about the game, the author Dave Thier was basically ecstatically crowing how he wants more games like The Lost Legacy. A lot of the praise that he and other publishers are showering on the game basically stem from Naughty Dog’s ability to keep every aspect balanced. It pays homage to the other five games in the series while also adding just enough new things to keep it interesting.

“It's a new kind of game, and it's an old kind of game: it doesn't really have the ambition of something like Uncharted 4, but it doesn't really need to, either. At $40 it finds a comfortable place as a breezy, fun adventure, as easy to pick up as it is to put down,” Thier wrote.

This sentiment is mirrored by other publishers, with some noting how much the developers were able to do with an arguably smaller budget. On the other hand, there are quite a few things about The Lost Legacy that help make it easier to build compared to Uncharted 4. For starters, it all happens in India, which helps minimize the variety of flora, fauna, and environment that Naughty Dog had to make. It also features the same engine as the main PS4 game, so that helps a ton.

Even so, this didn’t stop the developers from adding all kinds of insane details in the game. Kotaku is particularly impressed with the map mechanics. In the game, Chloe Frazer would take out the map every time players come across points of interest.

Locations that were cleared out are marked with an X, which players can see when they bring up the map. However, once the map closed and the players are brought back to the game, the portions with Xs are still clearly visible. It’s a small but noteworthy proof of the developers’ love for the Uncharted franchise.
