CLEARWATER, Fla., Feb. 10, 2016 -- On February 6th, dozens of residents came together and cleaned up streets and lawns in North Greenwood as part of the Adopt Greenwood Project. A total of 60 bags of garbage, 20 old tires and 95 cubic feet of palm fronds were disposed of.
The Adopt Greenwood Project was formed by members of The Way to Happiness Foundation in coordination with leaders in Greenwood.
Volunteers from the organizations rallied together at the Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Community Center to kick off the cleanup.
Joining the volunteers at the MLK Center in the heart of Greenwood was Wade Clark, President of the Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition, several other members of the coalition and an Officer from the City of Clearwater Police Department.
The cleanup coordinator and local resident, Bob Kenne, informed volunteers of the cleanup routes and gave out gloves, garbage pickers and bags, supplied by Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Following this, volunteers hit the streets, picking up litter and speaking with residents to find what other assistance is needed.
The cleanup was followed by a fish-fry lunch back at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, organized by the Martin Luther King Coalition. The lunch raised funds for the Center, and residents as well as volunteers donated towards the cause.
Upcoming events at the Center include a Music Night on February 20th and special movie nights. Future cleanups will be every Saturday morning, starting at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.
