The organic strawberries that are sold in major supermarkets and groceries, including Walmart, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s, are being investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its possible connection to the Hepatitis A outbreak in the United States.
The FDA said that the affected strawberries are from the FreshKampo and HEB brands. In addition to the mentioned stores, the organic fruit that is linked to Hepatitis A Virus is also being sold at Aldi, HEB, Safeway, Weis Markets, Sprouts Farmers Market, and WinCo Foods.
The investigation is still ongoing, and Business Insider reported that there has been a total of 17 Hepatitis A cases so far in the U.S., and all of them were discovered to have links to the strawberries that were purchased between March 5 and April 25 this year.
The food and drug agency is looking into the Hepatitis A outbreak that is affecting several states in the U.S. and Canada. It was reported that these cases are potentially linked to the HEB, and FreshKampo branded organic strawberries.
The FDA issued a warning and told people who bought the strawberries in the mentioned period to discard the item. Even if they were frozen, people were advised to throw them away immediately.
“If consumers purchased fresh organic strawberries branded as FreshKampo or HEB between March 5, 2022, and April 25, 2022, ate those berries in the last two weeks, and have not been vaccinated against hepatitis A, they should immediately consult with their healthcare professional to determine whether post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed,” part of the FDA notice posted on its website reads.
The agency added, “PEP is recommended for unvaccinated people who have been exposed to hepatitis A virus in the last two weeks because vaccination can prevent a hepatitis A infection if given within 14 days of exposure. Those with evidence of previous hepatitis A vaccination or previous hepatitis A infection does not require PEP.”
Meanwhile, 17 illnesses were reported to the FDA, and 12 were hospitalized after consuming the strawberries. The cases were from California (15 cases), while North Dakota and Minnesota reported one case each.
