LONDON, April 20, 2018 -- Gualtallary Valley of Argentina’s Mendoza region used to be semi-desert terrain, with no access to electricity or water above ground. Jean Bousquet, a French winemaker, discovered the area during a family holiday in 1990, cultivating the land to what is now known as the Domaine Bousquet vineyards.
Two decades later, and Domaine Bousquet has become one of the world’s leading organic wineries. It has consequently received international acclaim; it was named in the World Finance Fine Wine Report 2018 and was awarded Best Wine Producer in Argentina, 2018.
Coming from four generations of winemakers, the Bousquet family knows all to well that sustainable environmental practices and working with the local community are both key to long-term success. As such, the winery uses natural fertilisers, while all its vineyards operate drip irrigation systems to reduce water consumption. It is also currently installing solar panels to take advantage of the Mendoza region’s three hundred days of annual sunshine.
Its pioneering attitude towards its staff has also stimulated local economic activity. Domaine Bousquet hires 95 percent of its employees from Tupungato, a town 10km from the winery, and it has also created training and development programmes so that employees can achieve their full potential.
Given that consumer preferences are veering towards brands that care about sustainable processes, Domaine Bousquet is certainly becoming a well-known name when it comes to sustainable wine. In fact, the winery has redefined the organic wine industry, and its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint while still producing high-quality wine, has won it a global customer base.
