Zcash’s NU7 upgrade left 12,224.21 ZEC in its legacy Sprout pool without a spending path under current rules, while ZIP 2003 keeps the coins within the network’s issued supply.

ZecStats recorded the balance when NU7 activated Thursday at block 3,543,405. The figure is an activation-time reading of the ZEC held in Sprout.

With NU7 active, nodes reject version 4 transactions, leaving Sprout balances without a valid spending path under current rules. Owners who did not move their funds before activation cannot transfer them under the rules the network now accepts.

ZIP 2003 says the coins remain part of Zcash’s issued supply even though they are unspendable. It allows for a later protocol change to restore spending, but says that may never happen.

Separately, under ZIP 218, NU7 reduced Zcash’s target interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. EconoTimes previously covered the activation and shorter block target.
