Sharmila Vaz

Senior research fellow, School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work, Curtin University
Dr Sharmila Vaz is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work. Sharmila’s research interests span the fields of disability, health, participation, and rehabilitation. Sharmila is particularly interested in understanding how individual differences and contextual factors (family, school, community, and rehabilitation) relate to psychosocial, educational, and participatory outcomes, across the life span. Sharmila has worked as a clinician in a variety of populations, including, children and adolescents with disability and people with neurological conditions. She has experience in conducting and managing large-scale research projects; and expertise in measurement, quantitative design and analyses.

Sharmila is currently involved in several projects including: the KIDDO program; coping and resilience in children and adolescents; clinical pathways for people with traumatic brain injury; development and validation of dynamic assessments in occupational therapy; and lived experiences of families of children with disability.

Over the course of her academic training in India, Australia, and Canada, Sharmila has been awarded several scholarships. To date, Sharmila has secured over AU$1.5 million in grant money, published over 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and presented at over 20 conferences. Her research has surfaced in over 13 media releases. Dr Vaz currently supervises five doctoral and has supervised sixteen honours students to completion.
