Alonso Gurmendi Dunkelberg is a PhD candidate at University College London and an Assistant Professor at Universidad del Pacífico, in Lima, Peru. He is also a contributing editor for the international law blog Opinio Juris and consults for Human Rights Watch, assisting in compiling its annual report on Peru. He is the author of "Conflicto Armado en el Perú: La Época del Terrorismo bajo el Derecho Internacional" (Universidad del Pacífico Press, 2019), a book studying the application of international humanitarian law to the Peruvian countersubversive struggle against the Shining Path terrorist organization.
He specializes in public international law, specifically, the law on use of force and the law of armed conflict, with a particular interest in their history in Latin American. He also frequently comments on the international politics of Latin America.
