My current research focus is aimed at characterizing changes in the bone marrow during disease and infection. During a virus infection, an immune response is rapidly induced. This immune response is required to kill the virus and infected cells. However, the immune response often also causes a lot of the damage and pathology that is observed. I also work with the NHMRC-funded Centre of Excellence in Severe Asthma. In this role I have a strong focus on communications and translation of research findings into the clinic and education medical professionals. I completed my PhD studies with Dr Kelly McNagny at The Biomedical Research Centre, University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada (2010). My research focused on the role of CD34 (and the related molecule podocalyxin) in pre-clinical disease models.

I have always been fascinated by the role and impact science has in society. This extends beyond the obvious utility of science - technology, to the communication and influence it has on how we view ourselves and our universe, both in the past and our ever changing present. The other side of that is my current research interest - what makes science different to other forms of knowledge? Seems reasonable for someone who studied physics - after growing up with a telescope, geology pick and a chemistry set and wanting to become an astronaut. Meanwhile I manage engagements between the University (of Melbourne) and Industry and Government bodies. For more than 20 years I worked as a research scientist in both academia (RMIT University & Salford University) and industry (Amcor Research & Technology Centre). As well as holding an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow, I held fellowships and grants from the UK Ministry of Defense (Royal Signals & Radar Establishment, Malvern), the UK Science and Engineering Research Council and the Australian Research Council. I have also worked in corporate, strategy, marketing and consulting roles. A lapsed triathlete I have been known to race and enjoy the occasional ultra trail-run.
