Global Geo-political Series: Philippines break up with US to join China

In one of the biggest setbacks in the modern history of global geopolitics, Philippines declared that it is breaking up with the United States’ alliance officially and joining China. Rodrigo Duterte, the newly elected President of Philippines, who came to limelight by accusing the United States of wrongly lecturing him on human rights and called US President Barack Obama “son of a bitch/whore” and told that Mr. Obama can “go to hell”. He also claimed global attention, when he announced that China is the most powerful in the region, not the United States.

This is truly one of the biggest setbacks for the United States in the modern history because Philippines was supposed to be an important ally as it won a territorial claim against China in the South China Sea, according to the ruling by the international court in Hague.

Over the past years, China has claimed most of the South China Sea, and the ruling in favor of Philippines could have been instrumental for the United States, who supports free navigation and denies such claims to be acceptable including other countries. After the ruling, China urged Philippines to set aside the legal papers in return for investments and joint development.

That has exactly happened and like we mentioned before, President Obama’s Pivot Asia has essentially failed.

Speaking in Beijing Mr. Duterte said, “I announce my separation from the United States,” on Thursday after announcing on Wednesday, “I will not go to America any more. We will just be insulted there. So time to say goodbye my friend.”
