‘Westworld’ season 1’s episode 4, entitled “Dissonance Theory”, will feature Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores Abernathy learning of a maze that may be the key to her freedom.
The synopsis for episode 4 posted on Coming Soon stated, “Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) joins William (Jimmi Simpson) and Logan (Ben Barnes) on a bounty hunt in the badlands. The Man in Black (Ed Harris), with Lawrence (Clifton Collins, Jr.) in tow, finds a critical clue in his search to unlock the maze. Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) and Theresa (Sidse Babett Knudsen) discuss the future of the park. Maeve (Thandie Newton) is troubled by a recurring vision.”
The new promo opens with Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) telling Dolores, “There’s something I’d like you to try. It’s a game. A maze. The goal is to find the center of it. If you can do that, then maybe you can be free.” Dolores then tells him that she does indeed want to be free with tears filling her eyes. It seems that the key to getting out of Westworld is the mysterious maze, referenced throughout episodes in season 1.
Wright plays the head of the Westworld Programming Division and creator of artificial people called “Hosts”. Wood’s Dolores is a Western girl who finds out that her whole life is an elaborate farce. The new science-fiction and thriller television series by HBO is based on the 1973 film of the same name, which was written and directed by American novelist Michael Crichton.
The series takes place in a complex world called Westworld created by Anthony Hopkins’ brilliant Dr. Robert Ford. One of the most interesting scenes in the promo was Dr. Ford saying, “We know everything about our guests, as we know everything about our employees... So I will ask you nicely: don’t get in my way.”
Westworld was created for the amusement of “Newcomers” (otherwise known as “Guests”), who pay large sums of money in exchange for an experience in the Western-themed park populated by androids called “Hosts.” These “guests” are free to do whatever they want in the park without fear of retaliation from the “hosts”.
Towards the end of the promo, a large machine is seen digging up something in Westworld, presumably carving out new territory. It still remains unknown whether Dr. Ford is genuinely good or evil, or whether or not he plays a key role in the impending android-human conflict.
According to Den of Geek, the series is produced by Athena Wickham and executive produced by J.J. Abrams of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ fame, Emmy Award-winner Jerry Weintraub, and Bryan Burk. It stars Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Ben Barnes, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Hemsworth, Rodrigo Santoro, and Ingrid Bolso Berdal.
‘Westworld’ is a science-fiction and thriller television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. It premiered on HBO on October 2, 2016. Season 1’s episode 4 is entitled “Dissonance Theory” and is directed by Vincenzo Natali with a script by Ed Brubaker and Jonathan Nolan.
The series’ first season consists of ten episodes. Since its premiere, it has received significant praise from critics for its visuals, performances, plot, and thematic elements.
