ROSEVILLE, Calif. and KAILUA, Hawaii, Feb. 20, 2018 -- Adventist Health—a nonprofit integrated health system serving more than 75 communities on the West Coast and in Hawaii—is proud to announce a huge win for its medical center in Kailua, Hawaii. Adventist Health Castle has been honored with the 2017 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the category of healthcare for its excellence in implementing successful quality management systems throughout its growing enterprise.
“We could not be more proud of our Adventist Health Castle team in Hawaii,” said Adventist Health Chief Executive Officer, Scott Reiner. “From start to finish, our staff provides every patient attentive and knowledgeable care and it is great to see this translate into industry recognition. The biggest winner here is the local community: This award simply validates what they have already come to love and expect from Adventist Health Castle.”
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1987 and named after late Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige, a proponent of quality management, the Baldrige Awards are managed and administered by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. This impressive win by Adventist Health Castle comes after years of dedication and commitment in seeking quality excellence.
“This has been a long road of dedicated work and tireless effort by the talented team here at Castle and with support from the Adventist Health system as a whole in our efforts for excellence,” said Kathryn Raethel, Adventist Health Castle president. “It is an honor to be recognized for that work with this achievement.”
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 8, 2018 in Baltimore, Md. where President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will present the illustrious accolade to Adventist Health Castle president, Kathryn Raethel.
Not only is this the first time that the California-based Adventist Health has won the Baldrige National Quality Award; it is also the first time there has ever been a Hawaiian-based award recipient.
“Congratulations to everyone at Adventist Health Castle!” Reiner said. “We look forward to continuing our positive and productive relationship with the 131,886 households we proudly serve on the island. We would also like to thank the Department of U.S. Commerce for this humbling acknowledgement, which inspires every member of our dedicated team.”

In addition to the Baldrige, two of the health system’s hospitals were the 2017 recipients of the California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) Eureka Award for Performance Excellence given out by the California Council for Excellence (CCE). Adventist Health White Memorial earned a Gold Level award and Adventist Health Sonora earned a Bronze Level. The honorees are recognized based on the Baldrige Framework for Performance Excellence for their outstanding commitment to sustainable excellence through innovation, continuous improvement and visionary leadership.
