As the current phase of the MCU is coming to a close, Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige is looking to set up the next events for the franchise. And one film that got fans straightening on their seats is “Black Widow.”
Feige himself has already confirmed that the film will indeed make its way into theaters one day, although he has yet to announce when exactly it will come out. This isn’t surprising since “Black Widow” is still in preproduction. Most of the narrative being discussed at the moment is the cast, Den of Geek reported.
Obviously, Scarlett Johansson will lead the movie. But the co-leads and supporting roles for “Black Widow” have yet to be filled. One actress that is currently making huge waves on this regard is “Harry Potter” alum Emma Watson. She’ll supposedly play a James Bond-esque character that has yet to be named.
But Watson’s inclusion isn’t set in stone as Alice Englert, Dar Zuzovsky, and Florence Pugh are also being considered for the role. Regarding the plot of “Black Widow,” nothing has leaked just yet. However, speculations are saying that it will be set in the early 2000s, a time before Natasha was employed by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). There’s also this statement from Johansson to consider.
“There's a lot of opportunities to mine that storyline. She's got a really rich origins story. There's a lot of places you can go – you can bring [Black Widow] back to Russia. You could explore the Widow programme. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she's part of,” Johansson said.
The widow programme is what really stands out from this given that it’s been hinted in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” During the movie, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) bewitched Natasha into dreaming about her past, with the nightmare taking the form of her training. “Black Widow” going this route does have precedence as Marvel used Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) visions in the same film to set up the events of “Thor: Ragnarok.”
