‘Cars 3’ recently released its latest concept art featuring a brand new character by the name of Cruz Ramirez. Cruz is set to help train main protagonist Lightning McQueen as he enters another race.
According to USA Today, a new character will be introduced in the third installment in the popular 3D animated ‘Cars’ franchise by Pixar Animation Studios. Anthropomorphic race car Cruz Ramirez is set to join Lightning McQueen and his team as shown in the newly released concept art for the third film. Cruz is a Hispanic yellow race car who helps Lightning McQueen train for another highly competitive race.
Director Brian Fee revealed, “Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks… Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time… (McQueen) is not an old man, but he's one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.”
Owen Wilson returns to voice McQueen, the series’ main protagonist. The character was first introduced in the first film ‘Cars’, released in 2006, and went on to appear in the sequel ‘Cars 2’, released in 2011. McQueen is a red stock car based on Toyota NASCAR vehicles with design influences from Mazda Miata and Dodge Viper.
According to Female First, the first two films in Pixar’s animated comedy franchise earned a total of $1 billion at the worldwide box office – with ‘Cars’ grossing $461.9 million and ‘Cars 2’ grossing an estimated $560 million.
‘Cars 3’ is an upcoming 3D animated comedy-adventure sports film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is directed by Brian Fee and scheduled to be released in the United States on June 16, 2017.
Its predecessors received critical acclaim, with ‘Cars’ nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and ‘Cars 2’ nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. The previous films featured the voices of Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Cheech Marin, and Michael Caine.
