Fans of the ABC medical drama may have more news to look forward to about “Grey's Anatomy” season 15.
The show has already cast “Nashville's” star Chris Carmack as an orthopedic surgeon in Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for the upcoming installment. While speculation about Carmack's character has opened up the possibility that he will be playing an LGBTQ character, similar to his role in “Nashville,” details about his character have yet to be fully revealed. But it seems “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 isn't done adding new characters to its already prolific cast with the LGBTQ perspective in mind.
TV Line has reported that ABC has cast newcomer Alex Landi as the latest addition to “Grey's Anatomy” season 15. The Korean-Italian actor will be playing Dr. Nico Kim – the show's first gay male surgeon. Landi has not shared additional details about his role aside from the information that Nico Kim will initially be a recurring character rather than a regular cast member when “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 airs.
The show has already had LGBTQ members with different surgical specializations as part of the cast in the bisexual Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and lesbian Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). Torres held the role of attending orthopedic surgeon while Robbins eventually became the chief of pediatric surgery. But “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 will be the first time that the show will be casting a male actor with an LGBTQ character.
Unfortunately, both Ramirez and Capshaw's characters have already left the show, in season 12 and season 14, respectively. Alex Landi's Nico Kim can hopefully continue the representation of LGBTQ medical professionals in the show's upcoming seasons, even beyond “Grey's Anatomy” season 15.
Fans who can't wait to see the show's old and recently signed members of the cast can look forward to “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 returning on air with its premiere episode on Sept. 27.
