“Luther” season 5 is now in the works and a short teaser is already available too. As expected, Idris Elba is keeping his character as DCI John Luther in the title role.
The release of the teaser for the fifth season on June 19 confirmed that “Luther” season 5 is coming soon on BBC. Now, the show is returning after a long time, almost three years to be exact. What made them decide to do it again?
“We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do,” BBC quoted Neil Cross, the show’s creator, as saying.
Lead star Idris Elba also shared why he is putting on his “Luther” coat again.
“Luther has never been scheduled to do it every year,” he told Radio Times. “We do it whenever we want, and that’s why this feels like a good time to come back; it’s just because we’ve been away for a while.”
Elba also teased fans by uploading the first trailer of “Luther” season 5. He captioned the short video with the announcement that fans have long been waiting for.
“Luther is back! Coming soon to BBC One and BBC iPlayer,” he simply tweeted.

New Season Plot
Idris Elba revealed that “Luther” season 5 will be classic, which means they will not stray away from their original setting. He said that they do not have plans of “reinventing the wheel,” so fans are not likely to see a change.
Likewise, the plot for “Luther” season 5 will still follow DCI John Luther’s trademark creepy but brilliant way of solving crimes. It was added that the fifth season will see London “give birth to a new nightmare” so Luther will be forced to “confront the depths of human depravity.”
DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) will team up with Luther to solve the series of killings in the city.
Filming
The production of “Luther” season 5 resumed in January and Elba tweeted about it. In his post, he said that they were back in London and tagged @BBCOne. He also added the #Luther hashtag to state he was already working for the drama.

Who Will Return?
Aside from Idris Elba, Hermione Norris (Dr. Vivien Lake) will play a psychiatrist who will help Luther with solving the murders. As mentioned before Wunmi Mosaku will also be part of “Luther” season 5 as DS Catherine Halliday. Dermot Crowley (DS Martin Schenk), Michael Smiley (Benny Silver) and Patrick Malahide (George Cornelius) are set to return to London as well.
Meanwhile, it is still to be seen if Ruth Wilson (Alice Morgan) can still return. Rose Leslie is not coming back as DS Emma Lane.
Air Date and Episodes
“Luther” season 5 is expected to air sometime in the last quarter of 2018. BBC has yet to reveal the exact date but it will soon, as announced in the trailer.
