U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended President Donald Trump’s economic policies in a CBS interview, insisting they were “worth it” even if they triggered a recession. He emphasized that Trump’s policies were among “the most important” for America’s future.
Lutnick, however, shifted blame for recession risks onto the Biden administration. His remarks come amid growing concerns over Trump’s trade policies, particularly tariffs on key trading partners. Recently, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico but granted exemptions for certain sectors. Lutnick clarified that the U.S. will not double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Trump’s inconsistent stance on tariffs has heightened economic uncertainty, with fears of inflation and retaliatory trade measures keeping markets on edge. While Trump has positioned tariffs as a negotiation tactic, concerns remain about their long-term economic impact.
In a Fox News interview, Trump declined to rule out the possibility of a recession. Meanwhile, Lutnick reiterated Trump’s stance, stating that reciprocal tariffs are expected by early April. “Let the dealmaker make his deals,” Lutnick asserted, backing Trump’s strategy.
As global markets react to shifting U.S. trade policies, uncertainty continues over whether these measures will drive economic growth or push the nation toward a downturn.
