Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc. is stepping up its game by introducing a new chicken sandwich that it named the Blackened Chicken Sandwich. As it released the new item to its stores, it has also challenged its rivals to copy the new menu, and this dare may just reignite the chicken wars among the fast-food chains once again.
As mentioned on People, the Blackened Chicken Sandwich is Popeyes’ latest take on its own iconic chicken sandwich, and this one is very different from the rest because it has no breading. This trait really sets it apart from the others, as all the chicken sandwiches sold in fast-food stores have a batter coating.
Popeyes revealed that to make this, it only marinates whole chicken breasts for 12 hours in a mix of spices. After cooking, the cajun and creole-seasoned flavors are completed with crisp pickles and enclosed in a brioche bun. It also comes with two kinds of dressing, and customers can choose between Popeyes classic or spicy mayo.
The restaurant said that it took its in-house culinary team some four years to develop this new sandwich which it described as a "version of the classic Blackening cooking technique, which originated in Louisiana and is used to better seal in seasoning and spices to flavor the meat."
"Our Chicken Sandwich changed the QSR industry back in 2019, and since then we have continued to innovate within the category to give our guests what they want - even more Chicken Sandwich options," Popeyes North America’s president, Sami Siddiqui, said in the press release via QSR Web."
He added, “After the immense success of the Chicken Sandwich, we wanted to reinvent the category of traditional grilled chicken sandwiches with our all-new take on a non-breaded option, the Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich. We are excited for guests to try this delicious new offering and knowing our history for trendsetting, we have a feeling it may spark some copycat Blackened Chicken Sandwiches down the road."
USA Today reported that the Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich is now in the stores and it can be purchased starting at $4.99.
