Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have hinted at a “more mature relationship” that their characters will show fans in “Outlander” season 4. The hit Starz show based on Diana Gabaldon’s novel series of the same title returns in early November.
In the previous seasons of “Outlander,” Jamie and Claire developed a relationship despite the constant threat of being separated by centuries apart. But as the TV series digs deeper into Gabaldon’s story, Heughan and Balfe agree that their onscreen relationship is going to face another set of challenges different from the fear of being torn apart.
“I think this season we've had a chance to explore what their relationship is without the external forces ripping them apart in the same way as we have previously,” Caitriona Balfe told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on Aug. 29. With that, Balfe concludes that fans will witness a “more mature relationship” shared by Jamie and Claire as they settle in America at the time of its foundation.
Beyond being lovers on screen, Balfe described Jamie and Claire’s relationship as more like “a really solid team” in “Outlander” season 4. While their love for each other “runs deeper,” the actress promised fans to witness a romance that goes beyond the “on-the-surface passion.”
Meanwhile, Sam Heughan also hinted that their characters will be dealing with situations that relate to normal people. “We get to see them functioning [and] working with each other in very domestic situations,” Heughan further explained. It also seems like their time-traveling ability might be helping them solve mysteries they will be facing in their present era.
Heughan and Balfe’s roles will still be dealing with the disadvantages of time traveling. For one, their daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), will arrive in the 18th century (she is not born until the 20th century) in the hopes of finding her parents. However, she will first fall into the hands of the smuggler Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers), leading to a tragedy that awaits her.
There’s a whole new world ahead of them.
