“Shrek 5” was officially confirmed in 2016, so it should have been released a few years ago, but apparently it is delayed. It actually took two years before this confirmation was reported because, as early as 2014, the production of this movie was being discussed already.
In the franchise, it will be the next after “Shrek Forever After” that was released in 2010. The plans for “Shrek 5” emerged after NBCUniversal Comcast bought DreamWorks Animation Studio for $3.8 billion. After the purchase, the head of NBCUniversal and senior executive vice president of Comcast, Steve Burke, revealed that they will revive the franchise along with other popular animation films in DreamWorks.
Film reboot and sequel explained
In the beginning, the reports are stating that “Shrek 5” is a sequel, which means that it will continue the story after the fourth “Shrek” film. However, it was clarified that this is not the case for the fifth movie in the franchise because it will not pick up from where the last sequel left off.
“Shrek 5” will start from scratch as the new owners of Dreamworks want it to be different from the first four films. They said they will reinvent and give the new movie a fresh story.
With that said, it is clear that “Shrek 5” is a reboot, which means it will have a new concept and plot. To sum it up, the bosses at NBCUniversal Comcast want to offer a brand-new movie that they have not seen before, but the characters will be the same.
What to expect
When “Shrek 5” was announced in 2016, it was reported that it would be released in either 2019 or 2020, but the movie is not even in production yet up to now. Despite the script being completed after they hired Michael McCullers to be its new writer, it seems that the production has not moved on from that point yet, but since the development has already started, the movie is clearly not canceled.
“I finished that script and It's really personal to me,” Cinema Blend quoted the writer as saying. “It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it and I imagine they're particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise.”
As McCullers stated, “Shrek 5” will be reinvented and hinted that he got the materials he needed from the beloved characters in the first four films. It was also previously mentioned that viewers in the younger generation will be able to relate in this movie which gave the idea that it will be presenting a modern-day theme. Perhaps, it will feature the present way of life where Fiona and Shrek’s kids are older now.
Meanwhile, it was predicted that “Shrek 5” will be out by 2022 and this was posted on IMDb as well. If there will be no delays due to the coronavirus pandemic then, there is a possibility that this date is correct.
