Although it has been years since “Shrek 5” has been announced, fans have not given up yet and believe that the movie will still be released at some point. Since the day that NBCUniversal and Dreamworks disclosed that they are producing a fifth “Shrek” film, everyone just waited and looked forward to an update.
It was in 2016 when the merged studios mentioned that it is reviving the movie franchise and will produce “Shrek 5.” They even hired a new writer already to get the film rolling. Since it will all start with a script, Dreamworks and NBCUniversal signed up Michael McCullers for the work and he immediately delivers as the script was finished in no time.
Is the movie axed or will it still proceed later?
Now, while the foundation for “Shrek 5” has been prepared, it suddenly stopped from there. For years and up to now, there is no update if the movie is still in the lineup for future releases. Some say that it is still in the cards but just awaiting the right timing again after other animation took its slot in the past such as the sequel to “Puss in Boots.”
There was also a note that claimed “Shrek 5” was to be released this year but it was moved to 2021 as the world deals with the coronavirus pandemic. While this could be fake, the mere fact, there is an update like this may mean that there are still plans for it to push through. Besides, Dreamworks will surely make an announcement if the movie is not coming anymore since many fans are waiting.
Possibly canceled already?
Despite these details, there are reports that seem to suggest “Shrek 5” has long been canceled. It was pointed out that Dreamwork’s boss Jeffrey Katzenberg issued a statement regarding the film’s future and he said that it already ended in the fourth movie.
"Before the first one was finished we talked about what the whole story of Shrek is, and each of the chapters answers questions about the first movie and gives us an insight," IGN quoted the Dreamworks boss as saying. "Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp when we meet him in the first movie. There is a reason he came to be there, but there is another chapter to the story before that."
Now, this is confusing because they are sending mixed signals. Since there are conflicting details, fans should just wait a bit more to be certain if “Shrek 5” has been axed or still coming in the near future.
