‘The Crown’ season 2 is set to feature Princess Margaret as she finds love in photographer Lord Snowdon. Matthew Goode of ‘Downton Abbey’ has been cast to play Margaret’s husband in the incoming season.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, the second season of Netflix’s award-winning biographical drama television series based on the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is set to feature Princess Margaret’s relationship with society photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, better known as Lord Snowdon.
One of the first season’s most notable subplots belonged to Elizabeth’s younger sister Margaret, played by Vanessa Kirby, as she struggled with affairs of the heart. Season 1 chronicled the rise and fall of Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend’s (Ben Miles) tragic romance. Margaret was forced to break off her engagement with Townsend, a divorced man, to honor her duties to the crown after succumbing to pressure from the government and the Church of England.
Kirby expressed her admiration for her character’s real-life counterpart during a previous interview with Vanity Fair. She also gushed about Margaret and Peter’s love story saying, “There’s so many beautiful moments that you couldn’t see in the Peter/Margaret story that I wish we could’ve been able to do… I knew them all inside out. I wrote this timeline that’s everything that she had done in these years… I wish there’d been a whole series about Peter and Margaret because they’re amazing.”
Kirby promised that the upcoming season will follow Margaret as she enters a new phase in her life saying, “You should be worried . . . I don’t want to spoil it, but the history’s out there. She meets Antony Armstrong-Jones, and she goes head first into a completely new, exciting, dangerous, volatile, dysfunctional relationship and then marriage.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matthew Goode has been cast to portay Lord Snowdon, a British photographer and filmmaker who married Princess Margaret at the Westminster Abbey on May 1960. The couple had two children, David and Sarah, and eventually divorced in 1978 following the public collapse of their marriage.
Goode is best known for his work on the historical period drama television series ‘Downton Abbey’ as Henry Talbot and on CBS’ legal drama ‘The Good Wife’ as Finn Polmar.
‘The Crown’ season 2 was commissioned by Netflix and is expected to premiere sometime in November.
