It is still unknown where the franchise of “The Last of Us” is going after its sequel launched in 2019, but it appears that Naughty Dog is working on bringing the first game to the latest generation of PlayStation. The studio is reportedly planning to release a remake of the first “The Last of Us” title this holiday.
The information comes from GamesBeat journalist and games insider Jeff Grubb during an appearance at the Kinda Funny Games podcast. Grubb noted that he has been hearing from multiple sources that the “The Last of Us” for PS5 is planned to be released this holiday. “I’m pretty confident about that, too,” he added.
This is not the first time that a remake of the first “The Last of Us” has been reported. In April 2021, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that a team from Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group led the work on the project after the release of “The Last of Us 2.” However, Sony is said to have removed the group at the helm and was replaced by developers from Naughty Dog to take over the development of the remake for PS5.
Earlier this year, noted leaker Tom Henderson has also reported he has been told by “multiple people” about the same game. Henderson said the “The Last of Us” remake was “nearly finished” at the time and that it could be released in the second half of 2022.

Despite the mounting reports about the game, Naughty Dog has yet to announce the “The Last of Us” remake. It is worth noting, though, that the studio poured its marketing efforts into the remastered release of “Uncharted” games for PC and PS5 in the earlier part of 2022.
Sony is also recently reported to be gearing up to hold a summer PlayStation showcase in early June. Most fans expect Santa Monica Studio to release a new trailer for “God of War Ragnarok” at the rumored event. But with another report that the “The Last of Us” remake is on its way, it would not be surprising if Sony used the same event to announce the project.
