Heading to this year’s Cannes Film Festival? Don’t forget to catch the first screening of the new “Twin Peaks.”
According to multiple reports, the David Lynch-helmed reboot will premiere at the prestigious festival, which runs from May 17 to 28. Digital Spy said that as part of Cannes’ 70th edition, two episodes from “Twin Peaks” Season 3 will be shown to the festival attendees, ahead of its official debut on Showtime in the US on May 21.
Pitchfork said the decision to show “Twin Peaks” was an odd one, considering the fact that the movie adaptation titled “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” which was also helmed by Lynch, debuted on the film festival with much derision. However, The Hollywood Reporter said that the austere French festival may have given Lynch leeway considering the fact that he is a former winner of the Cannes’ Palme d'Or award. Back in 1990, Lynch took home the top honor for his work in “Wild at Heart.” It is also possible that Cannes may have given way to the times, as it is the only film festival which has hold out to featuring television series.Berlin, Venice, Toronto, along with other major international film festivals, have since included television series premieres in its lineups in the last few years.
The new “Twin Peaks” is set 25 years after the events involving key characters of a small logging town. The reboot of the 1990 seminal show will have the original cast returning to the show, including Kyle MacLachlan, Madchen Amick and Dana Ashbrook.
