'Wayward Pines' Season 2, Episode 3 Spoilers: "Once Upon a Time in Wayward Pines" explores Jason's Origin Story

Jason Patric as Dr. Theo Yedlin on Season 2 of 'Wayward Pines'

‘Wayward Pines’ season 2, episode 3 is entitled “Once Upon a Time in Wayward Pines” and will explore Jason’s origin story as to how he came to lead the First Generation. Nurse Pam returns to bring danger into the town while Theo continues to struggle with unanswered questions.

A synopsis posted on Carter Matt stated, “In a series of flashbacks, we learn how and why Jason Higgins was raised to be the leader of the first generation and favored child of Wayward Pines. Meanwhile, Nurse Pam (guest star Melissa Leo) resurfaces and becomes a lethal threat to the town, and Theo continues to dig deeper into why he was specifically chosen to be part of the population of Wayward Pines.”

It seems that episode 3 will explore the origins of Jason (Tom Stevens) further and that the return of Nurse Pam is set to bring in more danger for everybody.

The television series is based on the ‘Wayward Pines’ trilogy of books authored by Blake Crouch. However, it seems that the show may be running out of source material since it sped through the three books – ‘Pines’, ‘Wayward’ and ‘The Last Town’ -  for just one season.

According to Bustle, showrunner Chad Hodge said during a previous interview that the fast-paced adaptation of the books to the small screen was always intended. He said, "You do find out the big truth halfway through the season… And then we continue our story after that with where Book 2 and Book 3 go."

It was speculated that season 2 will be entirely original material and will not be based on any more books. This seemed like the plan all along since executive producer M. Night Shyamalan only intended for the show to run for three seasons. Shyamalan admitted during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he and Crouch already thought up an ending for the series.

Shyamalan said, “But, we thought it would be kind of cool to see if we had an ending, so we basically came up with an ending that we loved and then we said, “Well, how many episodes would it take to get to that end?” In our mind, we broke it up to an additional two seasons. It’s still an event series, but instead of 10 episodes, it’s 30… We felt like there was still a lot to be said about what it’s like to be on the last town on the planet.”

He also expressed his excitement for the new cast of characters introduced into season 2. He said, “And Jason [Patric, who plays new protagonist Theo] is interestingly funny the way Matt [Dillon, who played Ethan] was. He’s super charming, and I’ve been stunned by Jason’s nuance.”

The filmmaker added that audiences can expect for more of a sci-fi feel for season 2 in contrast with season 1’s mystery-thriller tone. He said, “[Season 2] feels much more muscular, because the premise is outed. You can have more fun.”

‘Wayward Pines’ season 2, episode 3 is scheduled to air on June 8, 2016 on Fox.
