“Westworld” season 3 is currently barrelling at high speed towards a wall of high fan expectations, but the upcoming installment's challenge is not simply its potential inability to satisfy its anticipating fans. It seems HBO's sci-fi western drama will also have to deal with some performance bloat – both creatively and financially.
“Westworld” season 3 creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have already publicly stated that they are both excited about the radical direction in plot that the upcoming installment can experience due to how things ended in the previous season finale. But with ambitious creative goals come a more stringent attention to detail.
Fans might remember an old Entertainment Weekly interview with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy about “Westworld” season 3's direction. In the interview, Nolan confirms the interviewer's suspicions that the production team of “Westworld” season 3 has taken into account that the upcoming installment may return as late as 2020 considering the scope of what the team wants to achieve. Paired with the more recent interview, such news makes a 2019 air date for “Westworld” season 3 unlikely.
In addition to the creative challenges and goals being targetted by Nolan and Joy for “Westworld” season 3, the show's own cast recently negotiated their salaries for the upcoming season. Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton supposedly now earn at least $250,000 each per episode being produced for “Westworld” season 3.
According to rumors, the pay raises have been particularly generous, coming from rates ranging from $100,000 to $150,000. The Hollywood Reporter predicts that such pay raises are in process due to HBO anticipating the end of “Game of Thrones."
Fans looking forward to continuing the stories of the parks' inhabitants may have to wait for a bit until HBO is finally comfortable to release an official broadcast date for “Westworld” season 3. Hopefully, a 2020 air date for the upcoming installment is not the best option for fans of the show.
