The latest Nintendo Direct broadcast concluded with a major surprise — a new trailer for the ‘Breath of the Wild’ sequel. The teaser also revealed the game’s official title and the much-awaited release date.
The game was initially planned to launch this year, but Nintendo announced last March that developers need more time to complete its development. And the company appears to deliver that promise after revealing the exact release date for the sequel during its Wednesday showcase.
The new trailer revealed that the “Breath of the Wild” sequel is officially titled “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” It will be released on Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.
Nintendo did not include actual gameplay footage in the new trailer, though. But it offers another look at some of the changes to expect in “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”
While the game is still set in Hyrule, the trailer shows that the main protagonist, Link, will likely spend a significant amount of time in the skies. Similar to previous trailers, Nintendo provides teasers for new areas Link will explore. And many of them can be found within the clouds.
It remains unclear if Link gains a new gear that would help him in his new missions in the skies. But the new trailer briefly shows a bird-like levitating vehicle that could be one of Link’s trusty new equipment in “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”
Nintendo also dedicated a significant portion of the new “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” trailer to some ancient stone carvings that mimic Egyptian hieroglyphs. The meaning of these writings, and whether they are omen or historical accounts, remains a mystery. But they could play an important role in the expansion of “The Legend of Zelda” lore.
“Breath of the Wild” was released in 2017 as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. But that is unlikely going to be the case for “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” While the sequel is launching next year, Nintendo made several pronouncements before that the next-gen Switch is not arriving anytime soon.
