Associate Professor, Journalism, Swinburne University of Technology
I am an associate professor and head of journalism at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne. I teach journalism practice (radio, television, studio), and journalism and media studies.
I research in the areas of international newsgathering, transnational broadcasting, social media, public interest journalism and terrorism coverage.
My most recent research projects have examined the global news agencies' use of UGC from Syria (2018), media editors' terrorism coverage in 6 countries (2018) and fixers setting up their own businesses (2019).
I have won three internationally competitive research fellowships that have taken me to Oxford University, City University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
I am Vice President (Networks) of the Journalism Education & Research Association of Australia, Editor in Chief of Swinburne's The Standard and am on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies and the national student publication The Junction.
My book 'Foreign Correspondents and International Newsgathering: The Role of Fixers' was published by Routledge Research (2015). I have a PhD in Media & Comms from the University of Melbourne and a Masters in International Journalism from City University in London.
I grew up in London and Brussels and in my previous career I worked as a reporter, producer and news editor for a number of international news organisations including the BBC, ITN and AP. I tweet as @ivorytowerjourn.
