PhD Candidate, International Development and Political Science, University of Guelph
I am a PhD Candidate in Political Science and International Development at the University of Guelph. As an interdisciplinary scholar, I have published in a variety of fields on topics such as the role or remittance in post-disaster recovery, climate change-induced displacement, mainstreaming climate change resilience into urban policy, and applying the capabilities approach to the global governance of migration. My PhD research is a case study of post-disaster recovery in Tacloban City in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. Based on 7 months of fieldwork in the Philippines, my dissertation examines how households access and mobilize remittances for post-disaster recovery using the lens of social capital. I problematize the optimistic notion that the rising tide of remittances lifts all boats and explore why some households are better at mobilizing resources than others.

I hold a Masters in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA(Honours) in International Development from the University of Guelph. I am a recipient of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholarship, the International Development Research Centre Doctoral Research Award and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
