Aideen's research group is focused on novel approaches to the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Her particular interest is the development of neuroprotective therapies, which have potential to slow or reverse the progression of this debilitating disease.
Themes include: Novel drug development based on elucidation of molecular signalling mechanisms of neurotrophic factors; Optimisation of dopaminergic neuroprotective therapies using viral vectors for long-term and targeted delivery to the brain; Development of animal models of non-motor symptoms and neuropathology of PD; Epigenetic mechanisms as drug targets for PD; Non-motor symptoms in People with Parkinsons; Potential of Exercise programmes to improve motor and non-motor symptoms in People with Parkinsons.
