Dr. Jane Pilcher is Associate Professor of Sociology in the School of Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jane's primary research interests are the sociology of names, the sociology of gender and the sociology of age and the life course. Her current projects include a study of experiences of the pronunciation of students' names in higher education (funded by The British Academy), long-term trends in name changing via an analysis of enrolled deed polls (funded by Nottingham Trent University) and experiences of names in adoption (funded by The Leverhulme Trust). She is founder and director of the People's Names Research Network, an international grouping of scholars who study personal names.
