Grace Muriuki

Dr Grace Muriuki brings more than 20 years’ research and development experience from working in both the public and private sectors in Australia and in Africa.

Before joining GCI, Grace worked with CSIRO (Land and Water, and Energy Flagships), where among other projects, she was engaged in sustainability, energy and climate change research.

Prior to that, Grace worked for the Queensland Government's Department of Natural Resources and Mines undertaking water planning, and managing a large ecosystem mapping project for ground-water-dependent ecosystems (GDEs). She has also held various part-time academic and consulting roles in the UQ School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), and the Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation at The University of Queensland.

Before coming to Australia, Grace worked in Kenya’s premier agricultural research institute (KARI), and the then Kenya Trypanosomiasis Research Institute (KETRI), where among others, she led and participated in agricultural research in the natural resource management, pioneered the establishment of a GIS lab, and undertook national research on livestock disease control and land use change. Grace has also worked with non-government organisations and international funding bodies in Africa addressing rural livelihoods in mixed crop-livestock systems.

Grace is motivated by a desire to be part of change through research. She has extensive experience in society and resources interactions, spatial science and analytics. Her current interests are the application of trans-disciplinary approaches in food systems, human geography, and mapping.
