Leading effectively means you must possess specific skills and attributes, especially if you are working your way toward being a leader in modern-day business. The roadmap between being a team leader or manager to the point where you are eventually a leader can be riddled with obstacles and things to learn. And since the way businesses operate and function is ever-changing. Take a look at some of the skills every prospective leader should work toward gaining if they plan to be a mainstay in the world of future business.
Becoming the most effective leader in the world of modern business requires certain skills. Greg LaScala with LaScala IT shares more about those leadership skills you will need.
Important Leadership Skills for the Future Business Professional
1. An ability to be an active listener.
Mark Twain once said:
"Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you would have rather talked."
Being an active listener means you aren't just hearing what someone is saying, you are also trying to understand what they are saying on a deeper level. Every good leader is an active listener. Executive coach John Baldoni recently gave a really in-depth explanation of how leadership starts with listening in a write-up for Forbes.
2. A persistent, innovative personality.
The best leaders do not give up easily; they push on even if it means something has to change. Consider the fact that the modern-day workforce has greatly evolved into more of a gig economy, which means long-term employees are not so much a mainstay in the modern-day business. People who lead teams of contractors and remote workers have to be persistent enough that they will work through challenges as the workforce evolves.
3. An ability to harness the power of creativity.
Creativity is about more than just artistic abilities. Having the power of creativity means you can be a creative thinker when you need to come up with unique solutions as a leader. In a survey conducted by IBM, creativity was given as the number one attribute companies look for in a good leader. Someone who is creative has the flexibility to roll with changes, they know how to take risks, and they know how to adapt to change.
4. A natural empathy toward other people.
Empathy is often disregarded as important, but that assumption of non-importance comes along with the mistaken idea that those in leadership positions act independently of the rest of the workforce. In reality, leaders have to hold empathy for others. The more attention you pay toward others, the more you can recognize their importance within a company.
5. Direct control over your own emotions.
Staying in control as a leader means keeping your own emotions in check. If you are frustrated with an employee because they can't grasp an idea the same way that you do, for example, you cannot let your frustrations hinder your ability to see the value that the employee could have a unique outlook to provide. Sure, there is room for emotion as a leader, but those emotions should never direct your actions or order your steps; instead, they should be only a component of who you are as a leader.
