Apple’s Store app sparked speculation by displaying a Face ID icon on a MacBook Pro, leading to theories of an accidental leak. While Apple has previously tested Face ID for MacBooks, it's unknown if this indicates a forthcoming release.

Apple Store App Hints at Face ID on MacBook Pro

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg News published a screenshot from the Apple Store app today. The image displays a Face ID identification indicator superimposed on a notch-adorned MacBook Pro.

You may locate the visual on the "Go Further" page of the Apple Store app under a banner that reads "We'll help get you started" while it is still available.

Expanded Graphic on Apple’s Website Raises Doubts

A more expansive version of the graphic that may be found on Apple's website displays the Face ID icon in a manner that is distinct from the Mac, which increases the likelihood that this is only an error.

This isn't completely unexpected, as Gurman had before stated that Apple was doing tests for Face ID on Mac. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a marketing staffer of the company provided some insight into why the implementation has not yet taken place.

Touch ID Considered More Convenient for MacBook

In the interview, the employee mentioned that Touch ID is seen as more handy for a MacBook. The button is conveniently located near your hands when you power on the laptop. Having said that, there was no indication in the interview that Apple was shutting out the addition of Face ID.

It is important to note that seeing this illustration of Face ID on a MacBook does not necessarily suggest that Apple will be deploying it in the near future, per Notebookcheck.

Face ID Icon Could Be a Design Oversight

There is a possibility, as Gurman points out, that the graphic designer had prior knowledge about an impending MacBook Pro that came equipped with the capability. On the other hand, the illustration could simply be an oversight.
